Contract Talks and FA Cup Triumph
According to the BBC, discussions are underway about extending Ten Hag's tenure at Old Trafford. Despite a challenging second season, which saw United finish eighth in the Premier League—their lowest position since 1990—and exit the Champions League at the group stage, Ten Hag ended the campaign on a high note by leading the team to a surprise 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Speculation Over Ten Hag's Future
In the lead-up to the FA Cup final, speculation about Ten Hag's future intensified after reports suggested new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe planned to sack him regardless of the result. However, Ten Hag appears poised to guide United through their pre-season friendlies, beginning with a match against Rosenborg in Norway on July 15.
Focus on Preparation
"Pre-season is about preparing for the season, and we have to make that our next step," Ten Hag told United's website. "It is one of the only times when you have the team together, and you can work on training structures, the way of play, but also on certain standards around the team. It's very important to take this period and use it effectively."
Squad Composition and Upcoming Fixtures
Due to international commitments, United are unlikely to have a full-strength squad available, with several players involved in Euro 2024 and the Copa America. "The squad will be as strong as possible, but of course, the players who go far in the Copa America and the Euros will not be involved," Ten Hag said. "There will be a mix, with experienced players together with some young players."
United's pre-season schedule includes a match against Rangers at Murrayfield, followed by fixtures in the United States against Arsenal, Real Betis, and Liverpool.
Managerial Rumors
Rumors had linked United with other high-profile managers, including Thomas Tuchel, who reportedly ruled himself out, and Mauricio Pochettino, whose potential candidacy has cooled since leaving Chelsea. Other names mentioned include Graham Potter, Thomas Frank, Roberto De Zerbi, and England manager Gareth Southgate.
Ten Hag is United's fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure in 2013, following David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
