Phil Foden has temporarily left England's Euro 2024 base in Germany due to a "pressing family matter," the English Football Association announced on Thursday. Moments later, journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Foden had returned home for the birth of his third child and is expected to rejoin the England squad on Sunday.

Foden, who earned Premier League Player of the Year honors for his pivotal role in Manchester City's title-winning season, has started all three of England's matches in the tournament thus far. His temporary departure comes at a critical juncture for England, who have advanced to the knockout stages as Group C winners.

Despite their progression, Gareth Southgate's squad has struggled to meet expectations, drawing against Denmark and Slovenia after an initial 1-0 victory over Serbia. Many England players, including Foden, have yet to replicate their stellar club performances on the international stage.

England's path to the final appears favorable, as they will avoid facing heavyweights Germany, France, Spain, and Portugal until the very last match if they progress that far.
