England kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Serbia at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday, topping Group C with three points.

The atmosphere was charged, with fans from both nations engaging in a few skirmishes around the city hours before the match. This tension seemed to spill onto the pitch in the opening minutes of the game.

The Three Lions began the first half with high pressing and several promising chances, eager to justify their status as tournament favorites. Relief came for manager Gareth Southgate when Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham broke the deadlock. Bellingham delivered a superb header from a cross by Arsenal's Bukayo Saka on the right flank.

England controlled the first 45 minutes despite a few scares from the Serbian attack. Serbia's clearest chance came in the 21st minute when Andrija Zivkovic pounced on a defensive error and found Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Al-Hilal forward had a golden opportunity but fired wide of Jordan Pickford's goal.

Despite their efforts, Serbia struggled to contain England's relentless attack. The Three Lions continued to create opportunities to extend their lead but were unable to capitalize. Notably, Trent Alexander-Arnold's free-kick in the 30th minute failed to find the net, leaving England with a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Serbia's Strong Second Half Falls Short Against England

Serbia started the second half with renewed vigor, determined to overturn their fortunes in the match. Their fierce attacks aimed at finding an equalizer, with Dusan Vlahovic coming close early on. However, England remained resolute in defense.

Dragan Stojkovic's side nearly found a leveller when Filip Mladenovic outpaced John Stones and passed to Aleksandar Mitrovic. Mitrovic's effort was controversially blocked by Kieran Trippier, prompting appeals for a penalty. Referee Daniel Orsato, however, did not award it.

Jordan Pickford emerged as the hero for England, making a crucial save to deny Vlahovic's powerful shot. Substitute Dusan Tadic also created danger from a corner-kick, but Harry Kane stepped up defensively to preserve the lead.

Serbia's relentless counter-attacks in the final minutes made the Three Lions nervous, but their efforts fell short. England now leads Group C with three points, while Serbia sits at the bottom with none despite their valiant attempts in the second half.
