Gelsenkirchen, Germany - England striker Harry Kane has become the most-capped player for the "Three Lions" in major tournaments. This milestone was achieved when he was selected to start against Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener, making his 23rd appearance and surpassing the previous record held by former star Ashley Cole.

According to the global football statistics network "Opta," Kane, now a player for Bayern Munich, has participated in 23 matches across the World Cup and European Championship. He edged past Cole, who had 22 appearances in these tournaments before retiring in 2019 with 107 international caps.

The England and Serbia match took place last Sunday at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, marking the beginning of Group C in the ongoing Euro 2024, which runs until July 14.

Harry Kane, 30, leads the England squad as their main striker, a role he has held since 2015. He previously represented England in Euro 2016, Euro 2020, the 2018 World Cup, and the 2022 World Cup, yet he still seeks his first major tournament victory despite a career filled with individual accolades.

Kane has scored 63 goals in his 31 international appearances, making him England's all-time leading scorer.

England qualified for Euro 2024 by topping their group in the qualifiers without a single defeat. The team played eight matches, winning six and drawing two, with a goal tally of 22 and conceding just four. Kane, who scored eight goals, was the top scorer for England in the qualifiers.

Under the leadership of popular national coach Gareth Southgate, England reached the final of the last European Championship and the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively.

Heading into Euro 2024, England boasts a remarkable record, having lost only once in their last 65 European Championship and World Cup qualifiers. The lone defeat came in a 2-1 loss to the Czech Republic during the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

England's best performance in the European Championship remains their runner-up finish at Euro 2020, where they lost to Italy in the final. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with Italy winning 3-2 on penalties.
