Spain and Italy will face off later today in a crucial match to determine who advances to the knockout stages of the Euros. The highly anticipated clash, hosted in Gelsenkirchen, pits the winners of three of the last four European Championships against each other.

Spain's blend of youthful energy and seasoned experience was on full display in their impressive 3-0 victory over World Cup semi-finalists Croatia, setting a strong tone for their campaign.

Meanwhile, Italy showcased their resilience by overcoming an early setback—the fastest goal in the competition's history—to secure a 2-1 win against Albania.

A win for either team will guarantee their progression to the knockout stages as group winners, thereby avoiding a potential quarter-final showdown with England. Historically, these two nations have met in each of the last four Euros, with Italy triumphing in the last two encounters after Spain's victories on their way to titles in 2008 and 2012.

"The players will understand when they get to my age that they'll want to have stories to tell," said Italy coach Luciano Spalletti. "This is one of those matches that gives them the chance to create that story."

Spain's more direct approach was evident in their win over Croatia, as they secured victory despite having less possession than their opponents for the first time in 136 competitive matches over 16 years. "It's almost like we're looking in a mirror actually," said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente of the sides' similar styles. "We are a growing, developing team which is working on cohesion and consistency and so are they. I think it will be a very high-quality match."

Masked Mbappe

In another marquee group stage fixture, France will take on the Netherlands on Friday. The participation of French captain Kylian Mbappe remains uncertain after he broke his nose in their opening 1-0 win over Austria.

However, coach Didier Deschamps is optimistic about Mbappe's availability after the star trained in a mask inspired by the colors of the French flag on Thursday. "Things are progressing in the right direction enough for us to try to have him available tomorrow," said Deschamps.
