In an interview with the German newspaper Bild, Southgate remarked, "I believe this is my last chance with the national team. If we don't win, I might not be here anymore." He added, "I think half of the national team coaches will leave after this tournament. That's the nature of football."
Southgate had initially planned to step down following England's disappointing performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. However, the English Football Association insisted he continue his tenure, underscoring their confidence in his leadership.
Meanwhile, speculation has linked Southgate with a potential managerial role at Manchester United, particularly amid growing concerns over the future of the current manager, Erik ten Hag, at Old Trafford. According to the British newspaper Daily Mail, Manchester United's owners are deliberating over ten Hag's future this summer, with club executives reviewing the team's performance over the past season.
Ten Hag has faced mounting pressure after Manchester United finished eighth in the Premier League standings. However, he managed to alleviate some of that pressure by defeating Manchester City to clinch the FA Cup.
Responding to rumors about his potential move to Manchester United, Southgate emphasized his commitment to the England national team. "I have a long-term contract with the FA to coach the national team," he stated, "and I am fully focused on the upcoming Euro, aiming to deliver a strong performance and win the title."
Southgate recently signed a new three-year contract with the English FA, extending his tenure beyond the upcoming European Championship. The contract also includes an additional six-month period to allow him time to decide on his future after the tournament.
As Euro 2024 approaches, Southgate's ambition to secure a major trophy for England remains resolute, with hopes high for a successful campaign in Germany.
